How often do you need to trim your natural hair?

“You need to trim your hair every three to four months. Usually when the seasons change, is when you trim the hair. Start with half an inch to an inch. Pay close attention to your ends. They will tell you that you need a trim. Natural hair strands want to make love to eachother. One curls holds on to the other curl and when you pull them apart, the hair is saying: NOOO! And this breaks the hair. So that is why a regular trim is so important.”

What is the best way to trim natural hair?

“With hair that is in the 3 category, you can trim the hair when wet or in it’s natural state. But with 4(c) hair, it is good to get a LIGHT blow out before you get your hair trimmed, so you can see the shape of the hair. With natural hair you can’t easily see where it’s growing the fastest and where you need a trim. I notice that whatever side you sleep on the most, the hair tends to grow the fastest. The blood rushes to that part of your head. Just check what side you wake up on the most and see if you have more (or longer) hair on that side.”

What are Felicia’s favorite oils for natural hair:

1. Jamaican Black Castor Oil (coats the hair and the scalp, but it stimulates hair growth)

2. Argan Oil (smooths down the ends of your hair, seals in moisture and  protects the hair from the (weather) elements)

3. Coconut oil (great lightweight sealant)

4. Jojoba oil (one of the most nutrient rich botanical oils)

*Put oil on your hair/scalp every three days.

What is the best way to do a consultation with a hair stylist?

It is important when you go to see a hair stylist, make sure you already have questions for the stylist. Questions like: What kind of products do you use? Do you work with natural hair? How do you work? I also advise to take some of your own products to him or her, just to show what you use. And…make sure the stylist has time for you. If a stylist doesn’t have 30 minutes, is that somebody you would want to go to? You want to make sure that he or she’s open to talking to you about your hair.

How do you combat an itchy scalp?

“You have to discover, what is causing the itch? Usually it stems from the diet. If you eat a lot of sugar, your scalp will be itchy. Tea Tree oil is great to combat that. Scrubbing (exfoliating) the scalp from time can help as well. But also check if you are allergic to something you are using on your hair.”
